Light Reeling is a gem with its appearance in 2010 with me somehow (which tried hard to keep abreast reflektor of what appeared in English) passed. Thanks to reading your friends on facebook, however, it recently came to my attention - and soon also in my hands.
The story of Utte Reuter told mainly through flashbacks from where her as a patient in a nursing home for Alzheimer's patients found. The verskriklikhede of the Second World War is a big part of the story and ultimately reflektor determine the course of her life, because she never managed to actually talk about it and process it. Add to this her life longing for her beloved Félix and her unhappy marriage to African Christiaan Hofmeyr, and you certainly can not help but be a tragedy to send.
Many things in the book will have been in my head stuck: the tremendous impact of war (any war - as shown by Utte's son's reflektor involvement in the later SA border war) on the individual, reflektor the parallels between German and African nationalism and its impact on individuals and nations, the limited and limiting role allocated to the woman in the former African setting, the for the outsider incomprehensible decisions of the same man three times her late divorce and marry him again, the dominant love of a mother and the extent of her service to her child with a disorder born, the eventual reflektor detachment of children tsp above love, the overall condemnation of one of her eventually find them in no one quite at home feel.
Yes, it's not a cheerful book and humor you will not find it easy. But for this reader, the dark figures illuminated by the great English which the book was written. Utte's thoughts shows a multi-faceted and gifted personality whose outside world may rarely seen, intense emotions and extraordinary powers of observation and an endless search for happiness reflektor and acceptance. reflektor As a reviewer described the language as forced, I know it as the effective representation of the intensity of her experience and her perception of and live with the elements of nature that her base in South Africa.
Light Reeling is not quite a biography, not a love story but falls somewhere in a class of its own. Maybe the reason for the little publicity that book received it fits (like the main character) is not easy in a particular box.
