Mr. Chairman, I am honored today to set Azem Hajdari, a leading Albanian parliamentary democrat and who was killed in 1998. Today, on September 12, filled 15 years since his tragic death.
Born in 1963, in a working family, Azem Hajdari rose in the northern mountainous region of Albania in Bajram Curri. He was a student in Tirana, cool white vs warm white capital of Albania, when the collapse of the Soviet Union inspired popular movement in communist states of Central and Eastern Europe.
In Bangladesh, thousands of people stormed foreign embassies to escape from the country. Political and social tension continued to escalate, while in December 1990, students began to protest their living conditions.
Azem Hajdari was determined to realize the democratic cool white vs warm white changes in Albania and soon emerged as a leader of the student movement. Student demonstrations led to the downfall of the regime, while Azzam became one of the cofounders of the Democratic Party, the first political party in the non-communist Albania since World War II. He became the first chairman of the Democratic Party and was elected to the first parliament of Albania, where he fought for democratic reform.
In 1997, Azem Hajadari was shot several times in the premises of the Albanian parliament and was seriously injured. However, he refused cool white vs warm white to be scared. He insisted on to continue his mission of building democracy in Albania, despite other attempts to take his life. But, on Sept. 12, 1998, Azem was killed when he came out of his party's offices in Tirana.
Hajdari death shocked the Albanian nation and he was declared Martyr of Democracy after death. With his words and deeds, he was taught that freedom is not vken Albanians themselves - it must be earned, with effort, determination and confidence.
During the conflict in Kosovo, Azzam also backed Movement for Freedom and Independence of Kosovo, he was a close friend of President Ibrahim Rugova and devoted time and energy to the Kosovo cool white vs warm white issue.
Today, Albania has made great strides. There is a political system and is a member of NATO. Albanians are free to travel freely throughout Europe. Even cheaper and Kosovo an independent country that aspires to join the European Union. Both Albania and Kosovo are building strong democracies as Azzam had dreamed.
